Bus City 2014 - initial report!

Bus City 2014 was held 2 weeks ago and was extremely fun and by all accounts a success! We had 37 buses there over the 2 nights and a good time was had by all!

Carole of the Yes We Can Camper Van showed up and, after many years of reading about her adventures, it was great to meet her.

Here is a write up she did on the campout:

More to come...

We might be off air for a while

BigBlueVW.com might go off-air for a while. This is due to a URL transfer. Basically, I am moving BigBlueVW.com from one service to another. This could actually take a few months (there is a complication with getting the URL back from Google/Blogger).

Anyway, I wanted to give you a heads up and let you know that we will be back online asap. The site will continue at BigBlueVW.blogspot.com in the meantime.

Anyone looking for info on Bus City 2014 - the VW bus campout in Sonoma County in May, you can find it here: http://vwcamperfamily.ning.com/events/bus-city-2014-the-sixth-annual-vw-bus-gathering-in-the-redwoods

Buses by the Beach needs your help!

Buses By The Beach is a group of VW bus lovers based in Grand Rapids, MI (though, when I was there, I met people from all over!).

Their annual campouts raise money for The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors.  Last year marked the 11th anniversary of their spring campout and to date they have raised over $140,000.00 for this great cause.

Buses By The Beach has rapidly become a spring and fall destination for old VWs in the Midwest. Last year, they had close to 100 VW buses and their families show up!

They are having an online fundraiser since have out grown their borrowed trailer and would like to purchase a new trailer this year. They are hoping to raise $4000 this spring in order to make it happen. To donate, go to http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/buses-by-the-beach-trailer-fundraiser

And watch this video to learn about why they do what they do. Way cool!

Bus Benefit 2014 - the 2nd best VW campout in the United States!

I may be a little bias since I organize an annual VW bus campout, but I stopped by Bus Benefit last year in Southern Michigan and was completely impressed with the event. It is basically a concert for VW bus enthusiast on the shores of Lake Michigan with a group of good people that are raising money for a good cause. What's not to like about that!

Plan now to join in the festivities!

Electric bug at Apple HQ

This was spotted by a friend who works at Apple. The owner of the car also works at Apple. You gotta give it up for a dude that probably makes good chip and decides to spend it on making his VW bug - a 69 maybe - electric.

Catching Vintage Surfari Wagons on their road trip

For a few years now (maybe 2) Bill from Vintage Surfari Wagons has lead a group of his buses over to the annual Buses By The Bridge in Lake Havasu, AZ. It's a big, classic get-together for VW buses and Bill is over south of L.A. so the trip make sense. (You may recall that Rell, a VW bus we rented from Bill in 2006 was the reason we bought Big Blue)

Paula, who is Monty's wife (Monty is Big Blue's previous owner) has caught the fever of documenting VW buses. She saw these going down the road and she happened to have caught the Vintage Surfari Wagons crew headed to Lake Havasu.

Bus on, brothers! Good to see them on the road.

Ever wonder what happens to The Bus Bus when it dies?

Those of you who follow this blog know that I adore the creation I have dubbed, "The Bus Bus". It's truly an invention of great pride for the creator and driver. What is a Bus Bus? Behold:

Ever wonder what happens to The Bus Bus when it dies? Well, people try to sell the VW parton Craigslist:

I may be the only one in history who thinks this is as sad as cutting up a VW bus in the first place. I bet that Bus Bus had style... I have no idea what use these could be now other than a small patch for another bus. They should have just stayed on The Bus Bus...
