4-29-11 - Big Blue's Week in review

This PORT magazine gets an early vote from me as "worst magazine ever" (and this is the first issue!). Not sure why I picked it up at the bookstore, but I did flip to this awesome picture of 4-door Vanagon pickup. Redemption? Eeeeee..... not yet.

Mid America Motorworks and Hemmings Motor News signed on as our fourth and fifth sponsors for Big Blue's Bus City 2011. We dig both of those companies and are very happy for their help and support!

I had Monday and Tuesday off this week and decided it was time to make some progress on the Green Hornet (the temporary name for the '56 bug). Engine tin was removed and hauled, along with the wheels, to the powder coater. The 2 transaxles were dropped off at Valley Wagonworks to make its way to the east bay, to Ron's Transaxle? Once the wheels come back, tires go on and then I have a roller!

Here are some pictures...

Engine (almost) void of its engine tin. Note my Jackson Pollock-ish painting in the background. Available to someone for the right price!

The truck load on its way to the powder coating place.

My dad, who, along with my mom, was in town for the last month visiting with Oak and buying up all the old outboard motors in Northern California. He helped run stuff to the various places doing work.

We took my 2 transaxles to Paul (center, above). For those of you who remember, the '56 bug came with 2 full transaxle/axle combos - both in various states of pieces. Paul will pass them to Ron and I hope to get a nice, rebuilt one back in about a month.

My brother flew in last weekend to see Oak He had never seen Big Blue, Little Blue or the Green Hornet and kept his bewilderment mostly concealed. Here he is with Big Blue...

Last week, I mentioned Static was back. He came home with gifts. He sent us a pair of travel conductor wands (who knows why?) and this wicked-awesome sticker...

Always last, stickers! My aluminum triangle arrived from Napa Valley Art Supplies, completing the last step in getting the stickers out to the VW Camper Family. My hope is to drop these in the mail before the May 1st newsletter/update!

The California Surf Project - Book review

I got this book, The California Surf Project, for Christmas from EP. It's an awesome coffee table book featuring a couple surf guys traveling the coast of California from north to south. Aside from this being much of the territory that Big Blue covers, there is something else about this book that gets the experience correct. While the book is great, the real treat is the DVD included in the book, which is about the coolest YouTube VW bus travel video ever made (but it's not on YouTube). The DVD is almost worth the price alone, but throw in the awesome book and I'm sold.

Big Blue's Week in Review - 4-22-10

West Coast Metric and GoWesty signed on as sponsors to Bus City 2011. New details are up about the campout so check it out. We are a month away!

We spotted a familar bus in the new issue of BEER WEST magazine. Party Pickle! Very fitting for a VW owner who obviously love his beer:

There was a bonus VW in the magazine as well. A VW food truck from the Portland area:

Gas Prices in our area (north of San Francisco) have hit $4.27/gallon for the cheap stuff. On Jan 1, 2011, it was $3.39/gallon for the same grade. That's about a 26% increase. Have you received a 26% percent cost of living raise?

Static is back from China! Those of you who love the man know what this means to the NorCal VW Camping scene.

I owe people stickers and haven't had time to cut them. Yes, I cut every one of them from a larger sheet. Cheaper way to do it, but a pain in the ass.

If we were in Portland in June, we'd want to meet Rusty:

And, last, thanks to Yuri for posting this picture to Big Blue's Facebook page. While not a tequila man, as a bus man, I appreciate this bus hitting the road and spreading good cheer! And you could drink Corrido in the back along the way!

Beetleboards of America

My interest in Beetleboards started when I was introduced to them in this book. I googled trying to find out more info about them and came across this thread on The Samba. Cool! One actually existed. I took a chance and contacted GoofyAboutBugs even though the post was almost 4 years old. It turned out that he still had it and, yes, was willing to sell it. We emailed back and forth for about a month before we worked out a price and I received it a few weeks ago.

It now sits on our mantel - one of the few VW pieces that made it inside rather than being stuck out in the workshop. I actually really dig it for the advertising piece of its history. Being one who goes in and presents ideas in comp form to clients, I appreciate the fact that someone saved this from such a presentation back in 1972.

So now I am on the lookout for more Beetleboad-related items. And a bigger house to display some of these cool items!
