Flip Flop-ing VW - the story of a flip flop

I didn't really believe this story when I started to hear it. I noticed a VW bug at a store that sold flip flops - the Flop Shop - in Kauai so I asked if they were made locally. Seems I stumbled into a pretty cool project.

Did you know that thousands of flip flops wash up on the shore of Africa? I didn't. But they do. Check out the story at UniquECO, the "makers" of this flip flop statue. Apparently, they make all kinds of things by picking up the flip flops that wash up. Then they sell them. Here's a whale they made.

So I bought "big" one (they have small ones as well). They guy figured out I was a VW guy. He said that VW guys were the only people who bought them. Also, he said there is a bus! (maybe as seen here?)

So, all of a sudden, I am feeling good about my VW addiction. Last year in Paris I found some cool tin VW bugs. This year I find this in Hawaii. I see a new vacation goal!

Feeling like you want to help the cause? Get your own online here. Or call the Flop Shop in Kauai, because they were WAY cheaper there!

6-24-11 - Week in review

The biggest thing we did last weekend was what we didn't do. And that was attend the Annual VW Campout in Maupin, Oregon. Several good volks that are friends (WestyWoman, Static, Gary and Otto The Vanagon) did make the journey. This is the 3rd year we have paid for the event and haven't gone. We'll try to make it next year. Interested in seeing pictures? See Gary's photos here:

We spent the beginning of this week traveling (in our modern car) from the Bay Area to Solvang (just north of Santa Barbara). EP was there on business and Oak and I tagged along. We saw a few VWs on the trip:

Solvang, CA

Tomorrow, Oak and I are headed over to LaVere's open house in the Easy Bay. The apparently have one of these on display. Here are the details, should you wish to go:

LaVere's VW and Audi Only (AKA: LaVere's VW Restoration) is having our once a year open house this Saturday from 11am-4pm at their new location @ 1121 Landini Lane in Concord. You are welcome to come by and look at Vintage VW's that are in process of being restored as well as 1 or 2 that are fully restored already. You can stroll around or yard and look a cars we have here and there are lots. Some for sale. If you now own or once owned an old VW, you will find the shop to be a time capsule back into the 60's and 70's concerning air-cooled VW's. You are welcome to come and talk with the staff about your old (or new) VW (or Audi) or learn what to look for when purchasing an older VW. There will probably be an impromptu car show outside as well.

Oh, and Bug Bash is in Vallejo this Sunday:

VWs of... Kauai

I interrupt this VW excitement to show you 2 pictures our rental car... A Chrysler 200. A god-awful piece of underpowered engineering. The only 2 things features that saved it was that the top went down and that it wasn't a Ford Mustang...

The above Westy was a rental VW from Kauai Camper Rental.
