Vintage Tuesday! Vintage Vacation #2

Summer 1971.

June 30th, 1971 - Southbound out of Eureka. I was supposed to make it down in one night to Healdsburg to pick up my girlfriend, Laurie, but got started late and took my time getting down the coast. Found a campground near Petrolia where no one was. Great ocean campground. Great sunset.

The plan isn't to take the direct route. South to pick up Laurie and, later, near Encinitas, my friend Rick. Then to Mexico, where I plan on having the front end of Elvis, my 1970 VW bus, fixed and painted. Then back through Arizona and Nevada, back into California.

Picking up Laurie in the morning. Then hitting a few wineries and continuing south. I have about a month before second session of summer classes start, so we have time, but it will go quick. Even though I grew up here, there is so much California that exists that there is so much I haven't seen. Look forward to shedding light on some of the roads I haven't been down. Illuminate them in my mind's map.

This is me...

And a picture of my dog, Dylan. He is not joining us on this trip.

And this is me with Elvis. Notice the damage to the front end? That was the result of bad judgment after coming back from seeing "The Band". I was a little, well... not paying attention. Anyway, my dad wanted me to get it fixed, so off we go...

Elvis and I near Fortuna.

1968 VW Owner's Manual

Again - a different manual, different history...

1/12th of a splitty at a cheesy strip mall bar...

I knew about this but hadn't had a chance to shoot it. A "restaurant" called Wipeout features a bus coming out of the side of the building. This is in Greenbrae, just 15 minutes north of the Golden Gate bridge...

Oddly enough, about 2 weeks after shooting the above pictures, I happen upon this other Wipeout in near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Looks to me like the other side of the same bus. Heartless bastards...

Vintage Tuesday! Vintage Vacation #1

VINTAGE VACATION!
Vintage Tuesday started out as a way I can share some cool old photos of VWs. All the photos that have been featured on Vintage Tuesday have been shared on the internet for the first time. In other words, they are not gathered from other sites.

Today, I offer the first “Series” within the Vintage Tuesday world. You will see about 18 pictures over the next few weeks of a VW bus taking it’s passengers through California. These are photos from the early 70s. Feel free to make up the story behind the photos. I do.

The friend who came along.

The Driver.

And The girl who tested their friendship.

Stay tuned for more vintage vacation pictures...

DETAILS AND WHAT-NOT:
Bus City 2009 was a success with 13 buses showing up. We had a great time despite the rare Sonoma heat wave. To see pictures from Bus City 2009, click here. For a video, click here.

Join us for Bus City 2010 along the Russian River at the Casini Ranch 22855 Moscow Road, Duncans Mills, CA 95430 (about 2 hours north of San Francisco). It will be a bunch of VW bus owners hanging out and enjoying the buses and the people who drive them

WHO SHOULD COME:
Any VW bus or van in Northern California should probably be there. But you should enjoy camping. Very little racing to be done at the ranch...

COST:
$40 for the 2 nights. Cost covers the site. You are on your own for booze, water, food and Doritos. There is a store at the ranch, but there's no guarantee that they'll have the snacks you like so come prepared.

THINGS TO DO:
1. Stumptown Brewery is nearby. Great back deck to enjoy lunch and a beer on.
2. The Pink Elephant. Looks like a crazy bar, but a great place for a cold drink and a game of pool (I haven't had the pizza, but everyone says it's great).
3. The town of Guerneville is close by.
4. The small town of Duncans Mills has some antique shops.
5. Canoe places are all over to rent canoes for a Russian River adventure.
6. Just up the road are some great Sonoma wineries
7. To the west a short drive, the Russian River dumps into the Pacific in the town of Jenner.
8. Can't get enough tie dye? Stop at the vendor in Rio Nido who sells homemade tie died stuff out of his old split window VW bus.
9. Sit back, have a Miller High Life, and enjoy the weekend with your bus friends.
